Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group saves energy with Cheetah

31-03-2015 | In the context of their group wide energy saving initiative 'Think Planet' the Rezidor Hotel Group is investing in the installation of environmentally friendly kitchen ventilation systems. A total of 20 hotels of the brands Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson in Germany and Switzerland are currently equipped with state of the art technology in order to run air supply and extraction in an energy saving and sustainable way. As of April 2015, Cheetah has been installed in 45 hotels through Europe. Energy consumption per hotel will be reduced on average by 150,000kg CO2 annually, equivalent to 150,000 kilowatt hours.

“The total savings amount to almost 700 tonnes of CO2 and three million kilowatt hours of energy per year. With this amount of energy, one could keep 3,000 Christmas trees lit for 12 months. That's a whole football field full," says Inge Huijbrechts, Director for Responsible Business at Rezidor. The environmental programme 'Think Planet' targets savings of 25% of energy within 5 years. The focus is on measures for the conscious and resource saving consumption of energy and optimisation of building management systems via efficient heating, ventilation and climate technologies.

The improvement of the CO2 and energy balance in hotel kitchens is being accomplished among others by equipping existing ventilation systems with Sprinx Cheetah systems. Temperature sensors measure heat in extraction hoods and air channels. Optical sensors detect steam and smoke in cooking areas. A microprocessor tracks the data and actively controls the ventilation engines. Air in and air out are adjusted to actual needs. “The current systems are in full operation for the whole working day, when in fact 100% power is not constantly needed. The intelligent control system reduces overcapacity, saving energy and money," explains Inge Huijbrechts.
